Early Times Report

Jammu, June 4: Weeks before the commencement of the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra, police in Kashmir have foiled an alleged fraud attempt targeting pilgrims and local service providers, arresting a man accused of impersonating a government official and collecting money on false promises of facilitating Yatra-related services.
Shri Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 28, 2026, with thousands of pilgrims expected to undertake the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir. Police on Thursday said they had arrested a suspect in the Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district for allegedly posing as a government employee associated with the Domail axis of the Amarnath pilgrimage route and attempting to mislead vendors and service providers.
According to officials, Police Station Sonamarg received credible information on May 27 that Mohammad Ayob Jara, son of Abdul Rehman Jara and a resident of Androola in Poonch district, was moving around the Domail area while falsely claiming to be a government official linked to arrangements for the Shri Amarnath Yatra.
Investigations revealed that the accused allegedly approached visiting vendors and service providers, claiming he could facilitate their participation in Yatra-related activities and secure permissions or services in return for money.
Acting on the information, police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Sonamarg and launched an investigation.
Following sustained efforts, police apprehended the accused on the evening of June 3. He has been taken into custody and is being questioned, officials said.
Police have urged pilgrims, vendors and service providers associated with the upcoming Yatra to remain vigilant and avoid dealing with unauthorised individuals claiming to offer official assistance. They advised stakeholders to verify credentials through designated government agencies and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Officials said further investigation into the case is underway to ascertain whether the accused was part of a larger fraud network targeting those associated with the annual pilgrimage.
