| BJP may re-introduce delimitation, women’s reservation bills amid changing political equations | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 8: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is likely to revive several major legislative initiatives, including the Women's Reservation Bill implementation framework, delimitation-related measures, and the proposed One Nation, One Election legislation, in the coming sessions of Parliament as political equations undergo significant changes across the country, according to political sources. Sources familiar with the developments said the ruling alliance believes the evolving political landscape could create a more favorable environment for pushing through reforms that have generated intense political debate in recent years. According to these sources, the recent shifts within opposition ranks, including developments involving the Trinamool Congress (TMC), have prompted the government to reassess its legislative strategy. The NDA is understood to be exploring the possibility of bringing back key electoral and governance reforms that had previously faced stiff resistance from opposition parties. Among the proposals expected to figure prominently is the implementation of women's reservation in legislatures, a measure that has received broad political support in principle but remains linked to the delimitation exercise. The government is also expected to advance discussions on delimitation and the One Nation, One Election proposal, which seeks to synchronize Lok Sabha and Assembly elections across the country. Political sources claimed that the changing dynamics within opposition parties could influence the outcome of any future voting on these measures. They said the DMK, which has reportedly become increasingly unhappy with the Congress over recent political developments, may choose to abstain if such l “The recent shifts within opposition ranks, including developments involving the Trinamool Congress have prompted the government to reassess its legislative strategy. However, no official statement has been issued by the DMK regarding its position on any future bills. Sources further indicated that a section within the Shiv Sena (UBT) could also extend support to the government on specific reform measures, particularly those relating to governance and electoral restructuring. As of now, the party has not publicly articulated any change in its official stand on these issues. Government sources have remained tight-lipped on the timing of the proposed legislative moves. However, political observers believe that if the ruling alliance is confident of securing the required numbers, it may seek to table the measures during the forthcoming sessions of Parliament. The One Nation, One Election proposal remains one of the most ambitious electoral reforms under consideration. The Centre has argued that simultaneous elections would reduce expenditure, improve governance continuity and minimize disruptions caused by the frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. Opposition parties, however, have raised concerns regarding federalism, representation and the practical challenges associated with implementing such a system. Similarly, delimitation has emerged as a politically sensitive issue, particularly among southern states, which have expressed concerns about the possible impact of population-based seat redistribution on their representation in Parliament. With political alignments continuing to evolve ahead of key electoral contests, the coming Parliament sessions are expected to witness intense negotiations and strategic maneuvering as both the ruling alliance and opposition parties seek to consolidate their positions on these significant constitutional and electoral reforms. |
