| Your phone resets, your savings vanish: Beware of new cyber trap | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 9: Cybercriminals have devised a new method to target bank accounts, with a CISF jawan in Mumbai reportedly losing nearly Rs 95,000 after falling victim to a sophisticated smartphone hacking scam. According to reports, the victim’s smartphone suddenly reset on its own, causing all installed applications to disappear from the device. When the apps were later reinstalled and the bank account was checked, approximately Rs 95,000 had been fraudulently withdrawn. Cyber experts suspect that the fraudsters gained remote access to the victim’s smartphone through malware or a malicious link. Once hackers gain control of a device, they can remotely operate the phone, access messages, intercept one-time passwords (OTPs), and carry out unauthorized banking transactions without the user’s knowledge. Investigators believe that cybercriminals often trick users into clicking fraudulent links sent through SMS, emails, or social media platforms. These links may install malware on the device, allowing hackers to take control of the smartphone and access sensitive information. Cybercrime officials have advised citizens to remain vigilant and avoid opening suspicious links or downloading applications from unofficial sources. Users have also been urged to regularly review app permissions and remove access that is not required. Authorities said anyone who falls victim to cyber fraud should immediately report the incident by calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or by lodging a complaint with the nearest cyber police station. The incident has once again highlighted the growing threat posed by cybercriminals and the need for greater caution while using smartphones and digital banking services. |
