Golden Chapter
6/9/2026 9:51:56 PM
The Zojila Tunnel breakthrough is a “golden chapter” in India’s infrastructure history as it will ensure all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.
The Zojila Tunnel being constructed between Baltal and Minamarg on National Highway-1 is one of India’s most ambitious mountain infrastructure projects, being developed at a cost of approximately Rs 6,800 crore. Built at altitudes ranging from 2,900 metres to 3,310 metres, the project represents a significant engineering accomplishment in one of the world’s most challenging terrains.
Despite heavy snowfall, harsh weather conditions and complex geological challenges, the project has progressed steadily through the efforts of engineers, workers, consultants, contractors, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and other stakeholders.
It is Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel and is scripting a new future of year-round connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. This engineering marvel will significantly reduce travel time, ensure safer travel and provide substantial fuel savings.
For decades, the Zojila Pass has served as a critical but vulnerable link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Every winter, heavy snowfall often leads to prolonged road closures, isolating Ladakh from the rest of the country and causing immense hardship to residents, businesses, and travellers. The tunnel will eliminate this seasonal disruption by providing uninterrupted connectivity throughout the year. This will ensure the smooth movement of people, goods, and essential services regardless of weather conditions.
The economic benefits of the tunnel are expected to be far-reaching. Reliable connectivity will reduce transportation costs, improve supply chains, and enhance trade opportunities. Farmers, entrepreneurs, and local businesses will gain easier access to markets, while tourism—one of the region’s key economic drivers—will receive a significant boost. Tourists will be able to travel more safely and conveniently, helping extend the tourism season and generating employment opportunities for local communities.
Equally important are the social benefits. Improved connectivity means better access to healthcare, education, and emergency services. Residents of remote areas will no longer face the uncertainty and isolation that winter road closures often bring. The tunnel will therefore contribute not only to economic development but also to improved quality of life and greater social inclusion.
From a strategic perspective, the project holds immense significance. Ladakh is a sensitive border region, and year-round connectivity is crucial for the movement of personnel, equipment, and essential supplies. Enhanced infrastructure strengthens national preparedness while reinforcing the integration of border areas with the national mainstream.
