| CM confident of statehood restoration, says NC protest at Jantar Mantar will go ahead | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 15: Even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would fulfil the aspirations of the people of the Union Territory regarding the restoration of statehood, he on Monday made it clear that the National Conference (NC) would go ahead with its planned protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session. Reiterating his party's commitment to pressing for the restoration of statehood, Omar said there was no change in the NC's decision to stage a protest in the national capital and remind the Centre of the assurances made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “We have resolved to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi at the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Parliament for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. There is no change in our plan. We will go to Delhi and present our views at Jantar Mantar for a day,” Omar told reporters in Srinagar. The Chief Minister said National Conference legislators, Members of Parliament, and senior party leaders would participate in the protest. “We still firmly intend to remind the government, at the beginning of the Monsoon Session, about the promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the restoration of statehood—a promise made in the Supreme Court, Parliament, and at several public forums,” he said. At the same time, Omar expressed optimism about the Centre's response to the long-pending demand for statehood and said he hoped Prime Minister Narendra Modi would fulfil the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Responding to a question about his recent meeting with the Prime Minister, Omar said a range of issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir were discussed. “We discussed various issues with the Prime Minister, including Jammu and Kashmir's financial position, statehood, and ways to accelerate development work. I hope this conversation will benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir. That is the purpose,” he said. The Chief Minister met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on June 11 and strongly advocated for the early restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting came days after Omar Abdullah reached out to leaders of the INDIA bloc seeking support for a proposed protest outside Parliament during the Monsoon Session to press for the restoration of statehood. During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Omar conveyed the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and stressed that restoring statehood would strengthen democratic institutions, enhance public participation in governance, and facilitate the next phase of the region's development. He urged the Prime Minister to expedite the process and fulfil the commitment repeatedly made by the Centre regarding the restoration of statehood. The National Conference had earlier announced that its legislators, Members of Parliament, and alliance partners would stage a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session to demand the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood and constitutional guarantees. The decision was taken at a day-long meeting of NC legislators and supporting Independents chaired by Omar Abdullah at an off-site venue in the Dachigam area on the outskirts of Srinagar on June 3. Following the meeting, NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said the party's entire legislative wing, including MPs, MLAs, and alliance partners, would participate in the protest. “The National Conference has decided that on the first day of Parliament's Monsoon Session, our legislative party, including MPs, MLAs, and allies, will go to Delhi to protest. Our primary demand will be the restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for Jammu and Kashmir,” Sadiq had said. The announcement underscores the National Conference's continued push for the restoration of statehood, an issue that remains at the centre of the party's political agenda since Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into a Union Territory in August 2019. |
