| Cong suspends statehood Padyatra after first day, raising questions within political circles | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 19: The Congress party's decision to suspend its much-publicized five-day Padyatra for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir after just one day has sparked discussions and raised eyebrows in political circles. Launched under the campaign slogan "Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq", the Padyatra was projected as a major mass-contact programme aimed at mobilizing public support for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. The party had announced that the march would continue for five days across different parts of Jammu city and would culminate in a strong public message in support of statehood. The campaign formally began on June 14, with a rally organized by the Jammu Urban District Congress Committee. The Padyatra was inaugurated by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hamid Karra and witnessed the participation of several senior party leaders and workers. At the time of its launch, Congress leaders had stated that the programme would continue for five consecutive days in various localities of Jammu city to intensify the party's campaign on the statehood issue. However, despite the initial enthusiasm and extensive publicity surrounding the event, the march was abruptly suspended after the first day's programme, leading to speculation about the reasons behind the move. Sources within the party indicated that the decision was influenced by multiple factors. According to some leaders, the prevailing heatwave conditions and soaring temperatures in Jammu made it difficult to continue the programme as planned. However, another section within the party attributed the suspension to the reportedly lukewarm public response to the inaugural march. Sources said the turnout fell short of expectations, prompting the leadership to reconsider the continuation of the programme in its existing format. There is also a view within party circles that the decision may have been taken following instructions from the Congress high command. Though no official statement has been issued by the party explaining the sudden suspension, speculation continues regarding the circumstances that led to the move. The development has become a subject of discussion among political observers, particularly because the restoration of statehood remains one of the key issues being pursued by the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. The abrupt halt to a campaign launched with considerable fanfare has led many to question the party's strategy and preparedness on an issue it has consistently described as a matter of public importance. So far, Congress leaders have not publicly clarified whether the suspended Padyatra will be resumed at a later date or replaced by another form of campaign to press for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. |
