| Centre tightens noose on drug cartels, Amit Shah to launch 3-year action plan tomorrow | | HM to launch campaign to facilitate destruction of 2,09,500 kg of drugs worth Rs 6,000 crore | | SANJAY PANDITA Early Times Report JAMMU, June 24: In a major push to strengthen India's fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will chair the 10th Apex-Level Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on June 26. The high-level meeting, being organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing the Centre's campaign to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a drug-free India. Senior representatives from 44 Central Ministries and Departments, along with 108 officials from State Governments and drug law enforcement agencies, will participate in the deliberations in both physical and virtual modes. A major highlight of the meeting will be the release of the "Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026-2029)" by the Union Home Minister. The document has been prepared after extensive consultations with Central ministries, enforcement agencies, state governments, and other stakeholders involved in combating the drug menace. Officials said the Vision Document will serve as a comprehensive national roadmap for tackling the challenge of narcotics through a coordinated strategy encompassing supply reduction, demand reduction, and harm reduction. It lays down a network-centric enforcement framework while addressing emerging threats such as synthetic drugs, darknet-enabled trafficking, and organized narcotics networks. Another key feature of the event will be the launch of the Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign, a nationwide drive aimed at destroying seized narcotics in accordance with legal procedures. Officials said that during the campaign, various Central and State law enforcement agencies are expected to dispose of nearly 2,09,500 kilograms of narcotic substances with an estimated market value of around ?6,000 crore. The NCORD meeting will provide a platform for a comprehensive review of anti-narcotics measures undertaken across the country and facilitate discussions on strengthening coordination among various stakeholders. Participants will assess progress made in curbing drug trafficking and drug abuse while identifying emerging challenges and future priorities. The deliberations are expected to focus on evolving trafficking methods, interstate and international drug networks, synthetic narcotics, rehabilitation initiatives and measures required to strengthen enforcement and prevention mechanisms across the country. Officials said the meeting will reaffirm the government's commitment to a whole-of-government approach in combating the drug menace and will help formulate a coordinated action plan for the coming years.
