| Drug abuse among youth in Jammu & Kashmir: Challenges and the way forward | | | Prabhjot Singh
Drug abuse has become a growing concern among the youth of Jammu & Kashmir, affecting not only individuals but also families and society as a whole. Factors such as peer pressure, unemployment, stress and the easy availability of narcotic substances have made many young people vulnerable to addiction. The issue calls for collective efforts from the government, educational institutions, families and the community. To tackle this challenge, awareness initiatives under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan are being conducted across Jammu & Kashmir. Schools, colleges and public institutions regularly organise awareness programmes to educate students about the harmful effects of drugs and encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle. These campaigns also stress the importance of seeking professional help for those struggling with addiction. Law enforcement agencies, including the Jammu & Kashmir Police, continue to take action against drug trafficking while rehabilitation centres and counsellors work to help individuals recover and rebuild their lives. Experts believe that addiction should be treated as a health issue that requires care, counselling and family support rather than social stigma. Parents and teachers also have an important role to play. Open communication, emotional support and early identification of behavioural changes can help prevent young people from falling into the trap of substance abuse. Encouraging participation in sports, cultural activities and skill development programmes can provide positive alternatives and keep youth engaged in productive pursuits. The fight against drugs cannot be won by the government alone. It requires the active participation of every section of society. Community organisations, educational institutions and responsible citizens must work together to spread awareness and support those seeking recovery. Jammu & Kashmir’s youth are its greatest strength. By promoting awareness, strengthening rehabilitation efforts and encouraging healthy lifestyles, the Union Territory can move closer to the vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat. A drug-free society is possible when everyone joins hands to protect the future of the younger generation. |
