| Respect for national symbols is a duty beyond politics: Balbir | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 18: Jammu & Kashmir BJP spokesperson and former Vice Chairman Balbir Ram Rattan said that the recent controversy surrounding the alleged disruption and lack of due respect shown to Vande Mataram during a political function is deeply unfortunate and should make every Indian reflect on the dignity accorded to the nation's symbols. The controversy has also led to political complaints and strong reactions, making the issue a matter of wider public discussion. Balbir said that Vande Mataram is not merely a patriotic composition or a ceremonial song. It occupies a special place in India's freedom struggle and represents the emotional bond of the people with their motherland. At a time when the nation is commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram, every citizen and every political organisation should demonstrate the highest degree of respect towards it. He said that political differences, ideological disagreements or electoral considerations can never justify behaviour that is perceived as disrespectful towards national symbols. "Politics may divide us on issues, but the nation must always unite us. The Tricolour, the National Anthem and the National Song belong to every Indian, irrespective of political affiliation, region, language, caste or community," Balbir said. He emphasised that national symbols are living expressions of India's sovereignty, heritage, sacrifices and collective identity. The freedom fighters who endured imprisonment, persecution and immense hardships did so for an India that would remain united, dignified and proud of its national identity. Balbir welcomed the strengthening of legal protection for Vande Mataram, noting that Parliament has recently moved to bring the National Song within the ambit of the law dealing with prevention of insults to national honour. He said that legal safeguards are important, but equally essential is the cultivation of genuine respect in homes, educational institutions, public offices and political platforms. He appealed to all political parties and public representatives to rise above partisan politics whenever national symbols are involved. He said that the respect for the nation should never become a subject of political convenience. It is a fundamental responsibility and a matter of national pride. Balbir urged the younger generation to learn about the historic role of Vande Mataram in India's freedom movement and carry forward its message of patriotism, unity and devotion to the motherland. He said that honouring national symbols is ultimately an expression of gratitude to those generations whose sacrifices made India's freedom possible and whose legacy continues to inspire the nation. |
