| Curiosity mounts over new J&K BJP in-charge after Tarun Chugh’s Gujarat appointment | | | Mahim Gupta Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 18: The BJP’s appointment of party leaders as in-charges for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat has triggered curiosity within the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit over who will be named the new in-charge for the Union Territory. The announcement came hours after BJP national president Nitin Nabin unveiled the party’s new organisational team on Tuesday. The latest appointments are significant as the BJP prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat. BJP national president Nitin Nabin appointed Vinod Tawde as the party’s in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, with Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel named co-in-charge. Dr Satish Poonia has been appointed in-charge for Punjab, while Tarun Chugh has been assigned Gujarat. Chugh’s appointment to Gujarat has particularly attracted attention in Jammu and Kashmir, where he has been overseeing the party’s affairs for nearly six years. In November 2020, Chugh was appointed BJP in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. During his tenure, the party contested the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections and secured its highest-ever tally of 29 seats. The BJP’s performance in the 2024 Assembly elections marked a significant milestone for the party in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region. Chugh played a key organisational role during the election campaign and in coordinating the party’s election strategy. With Chugh now being assigned Gujarat, speculation has intensified within BJP circles over his successor in Jammu and Kashmir. Party leaders and cadre are keenly awaiting the announcement, particularly at a time when the BJP is looking to consolidate its position in the Union Territory and strengthen its organisational structure. The appointment of the new J&K in-charge is expected to assume significance as the party prepares for the next electoral battle and works to expand its political footprint beyond its traditional strongholds. While the BJP has announced several key organisational appointments, there has been no official announcement yet regarding Chugh’s replacement in Jammu and Kashmir. |
