Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 18: The NSS Unit of MIER College of Education successfully organized a 15-day Swachhata Pakhwada campaign from 1-15August, 2026 emphasizing environmental cleanliness, waste management, and community awareness. Throughout the fortnight, 20 dedicated NSS volunteers from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Education actively participated in various sustainability initiatives. Highlighting creative recycling, the volunteers crafted a series of impressive utility and decorative items under the "Best Out of Waste" theme, which were later put on public display to inspire sustainable living habits. As part of the outreach program on August 11, organized under the theme "Plastic Free Village Campaign," the NSS unit conducted a comprehensive awareness and skill-sharing initiative at Government Girls High School and Cleanliness drive at Nougran (Bishnah). The program commenced with a warm welcome note delivered by Dr. Komal Sharma, NSS Program Officer. During the awareness sessions, NSS volunteers educated school students on the fundamentals of waste segregation categorizing waste into dry, wet, and hazardous/unknown waste, while elaborating on the core principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3 Rs). To provide hands-on practical learning, the volunteers organized interactive upcycling workshops where they taught students how to reuse old clothes, newspapers, cardboards, and bangles. Specific creative sessions focused on bottle painting, crafting planters from discarded plastic bottles, and making handmade paper from used sheets. During the event, Principal-in-Charge Mrs. Ranjana addressed the gathering, commending the youth-led initiative and stressing the vital role of educational institutions in fostering environmental stewardship. Due recognition and credit were also extended in absentia to Mr. Susheel Kumar, Sarpanch Nougran for his guidance and support in facilitating the drive. Towards the end, NSS member Mrs. Ayushi Grover administered a solemn pledge to the students and faculty, committing everyone present to maintaining a clean environment and upholding a plastic-free lifestyle. The NSS volunteers distributed handmade cloth bags to local villagers, encouraging them to replace polythene carry bags with sustainable alternatives. Thereafter they embarked on a cleanliness drive across the local streets of the village, actively collecting and removing discarded plastic waste to promote a cleaner environment. Dr. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal MIER College of Education, applauded the commendable efforts of the NSS unit, Program Officer and volunteers. He highlighted the importance of such community outreach programs in instilling civic duty and environmental consciousness among youth, encouraging students to continue driving positive social change. |
