Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 20: Acute water scarcity and deteriorating housing conditions have once again hit Jagti Migrant Camp, with residents accusing the Relief Organisation of failing to maintain basic amenities in the 4,224-flat township. In a joint meeting held here today, members of various camp committees expressed anguish over leaking roofs, damaged interiors, irregular drinking water supply and non-distribution of ration since April, 2026 to those households who have not filed the NFSA form. The committees said authorities had assured that regular water supply would be restored by August 5, 2026, but the assurance remains unimplemented. Residents alleged that last year out of six, four tube wells were inaugurated in the camp at a cost of crores of rupees, but they remain non-functional to date, causing a major financial dent to the exchequer. "There is a need to initiate an inquiry into the matter as why water supply schemes to Jagti have proved to be a flop show for the last several years," they demanded. Meanwhile, several residents alleged that they have not received ration since April 2026. "Relief Commissioner had assured us that ration will be provided without any delay despite non-filing of NFSA forms, but the promise has not been kept," said social activist Sunil Pandita. "For more than a week taps have been dry. Tube wells are not running due to frequent power cuts. At the same time, most flats have leaking roofs and damp walls since last monsoon," said and added committee member Sunil Pandita. The camp organizations resolved that if water supply, roof repairs, renovation of flats and regular ration supply are not taken up on a war-footing within a week, they will be forced to stage a peaceful protest. "The administration will be responsible for the consequences," members warned. Set up in 2010 for Kashmiri migrant families, Jagti Camp continues to face the same dual crisis every year - rainwater entering homes and drinking water not reaching taps. |
