| NC, Cong likely to form coordination committee to strengthen alliance | | | Mahim Gupta

Jammu, Sept 22: The ruling alliance partners, National Conference (NC) and Congress, have agreed to set up a joint coordination committee to strengthen coordination and ensure the smooth functioning of their coalition arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said the eight-member committee will comprise four representatives from each party. While the NC has finalised its nominees, the Congress is expected to announce its members shortly, following which the panel will be formally constituted.
The committee will serve as an institutional mechanism to address policy differences, resolve inter-party issues, coordinate on governance matters, and discuss public concerns such as development works, recruitment, administrative issues, and public grievances. It is also expected to help both parties maintain consensus on key legislative and governance priorities.
Sources said the committee assumes added significance as the Congress high command is yet to take a final call on whether the party should formally join the Omar Abdullah-led government. The decision remains under discussion amid differing views within the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC).
The debate has intensified following the NC's renewed offer of a ministerial berth during the proposed Cabinet expansion. A section of Congress leaders favours joining the government to enhance the party's political relevance and strengthen the alliance, while another group, led by JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra, maintains that the party should not enter the Cabinet until Jammu and Kashmir's statehood is restored.
The Congress leadership at the national level has so far adopted a cautious approach, reiterating that its stated position is linked to the restoration of statehood while keeping the final decision with the party high command.
Political observers believe the coordination committee will act as a bridge between the two allies, helping manage differences and ensuring governance remains unaffected while Congress deliberates on its future role in the government. The panel is also expected to provide a structured forum for dialogue, helping keep the NC-Congress alliance on a stable footing in the coming months. |
