Jammu, Sept 28: The BJP will take its fight over the Assembly's statehood resolution to the streets. Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma announced that the party will run a campaign across Jammu and Kashmir against the inclusion of references to the 2000 and 2024 resolutions in the motion seeking restoration of statehood.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar on Monday, Sharma said the BJP favours restoring statehood but will not support any reference to the constitutional position that existed before 1953. Had the resolution been confined to statehood alone, he said, the BJP would have backed it.
"Restoration of statehood is the BJP's agenda and we are committed to it. It will happen," Sharma said. He added that the party's objection is to the references to the 2000 autonomy resolution and the 2024 resolution on special status. According to him, these references raise issues linked to the pre-1953 constitutional position, which he called inconsistent with the Constitution. Declaring Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of India, he said there is no room in the Union Territory for Pakistan's agenda.
Sharma also questioned the Congress, saying its stand had become clear during the Assembly proceedings. He asked whether the party wants the pre-1953 position and the arrangements linked to Articles 370 and 35A restored.
He accused the National Conference and the Congress of trying to revive issues that could affect the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The region is sensitive, he said, and neighbouring countries have long tried to exploit circumstances and disturb the peace.
Sharma said the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is currently peaceful and statehood remains the main pending demand. The BJP, he said, has consistently placed this demand before the government and remains fully committed to it. On the timeline, he said the Chief Minister cannot set a deadline. Statehood will be restored, he said, but the due process should be followed rather than discussing the matter in haste.
The Leader of Opposition also criticised the Speaker for allowing the resolution to be moved despite the BJP's objections. He said the party has moved a motion seeking the Speaker's removal.
Sharma reiterated that the BJP will oppose the provisions and references in the resolution that relate to the pre-1953 constitutional position, and that the party will campaign on the issue across the Union Territory. |
