Jammu, Oct 8: After evicting them from outskirts of Jammu city, authorities are now going to start a comprehensive campaign to verify the identity, nationality and documentation of Rohingyas suspected of having entered the country illegally and subsequently obtained Aadhaar cards or other Indian identity documents through allegedly fraudulent means. The verification drive is also expected to cover Rohingya women who have married local residents and subsequently become part of the local population, with authorities seeking to establish their identity, nationality and the circumstances under which they obtained Indian documents. Officials said the exercise would involve cross-checking available records and documents with relevant government databases and conducting field-level verification wherever required. The police are expected to coordinate with the civil administration and other agencies during the exercise. The exercise assumes significance amid concerns among security agencies over the alleged use of forged documents by some foreign nationals to establish local identities and access government facilities. Police sources said the verification process could subsequently be extended to other areas of Jammu and Kashmir where the presence of undocumented foreign nationals has been reported. |
