Jammu, Oct 14: Setting the tone for the party’s next electoral push, newly appointed BJP in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir Dr Satish Poonia on Wednesday asked party workers to take the BJP into new areas and win the mandate to form the next government in the Union Territory.
Addressing his first meeting with party leaders and workers since taking charge, Dr Poonia described the region as the core of the BJP’s ideology. He urged cadres to reach out to every section of society and widen the party’s base.
The call comes as the BJP plans its next move after its best-ever performance in the Union Territory. In the 2024 Assembly elections, the party won a record 29 seats, all from the Jammu province, and emerged as the principal opposition party in the House. It is now working on a fresh strategy to extend its footprint into Kashmir Valley and improve that tally in the next Assembly polls.
Dr Poonia, who is the BJP’s National General Secretary, J&K Prabhari and a Rajya Sabha MP, said Jammu and Kashmir holds a special place in the national consciousness. He added that the party’s historic commitment to national integration, development and public service continues to shape the region’s future. He asked leaders to strengthen public outreach and make the most of the changing political atmosphere in the Union Territory.
Invoking the party’s ideological lineage, he recalled the supreme sacrifice of Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee on J&K soil for the region’s complete integration with the rest of India. He said former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee laid the foundation for accelerated development by expanding road connectivity and taking infrastructure to remote areas, and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has carried that legacy forward on an unprecedented scale.
