Around 100 persons injured during day long clashes | Normal life continues to be paralyzed across Kashmir valley | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: For the 27th consecutive day normal life was paralyzed across Kashmir valley due to the strike call given by the separatists and enforcement of curfew and restrictions by the authorities. Meanwhile, around 100 persons sustained injuries during day long clashes in the valley. Reports said that complete strike was observed in Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts. The impact of strike was also complete in major towns and townships of the Kashmir valley. Each and every sector of the life has been virtually paralyzed in the valley since July 9. All the shops and commercial establishments remained closed in the valley with the public transport also off the roads. The attendance in the government offices continues to be thin with very employees turning up for their duties. Most of the bank branches also remained closed with majority of the government and private schools remaining closed as well. In some of the uptown areas of the Srinagar city movement of the private transport was appreciable with many auto-rickshaws plying on the roads. There are reports that movement of private transport was also satisfactory to some extent in the Baramulla and Kupwara towns in North Kashmir. South Kashmir continues to be on boil with people continuing to register protest against the recent civilian killings. The authorities imposed curfew in areas coming under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal and Batmaloo in the Srinagar district. Curfew also imposed in the Anantnag, Pulwama, Pampore and Pulwama towns in South Kashmir and Khanpora in Baramulla in North Kashmir. At the same time there are reports that around 100 persons sustained injuries during the day long clashes in the valley. Around 25 persons were injured in clashes between the groups of protesters and police as well as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in the Shopian district. Out of the injured 10 were shifted to PHC Pinjora for treatment. Reports said that clashes erupted in Bongam and Bonbazar areas of the district after forces intercepted a rally that was heading towards the Shopian town. The police and CRPF personnel used teargas shells and fired pellets to disperse the protesters. Reports said that around 30 persons were injured when security forces fired teargas shells and pellets to disperse a huge group of people carrying out protests at Sirigufwara village in Anantnag district. The security forces also used force to disperse protesters at Seer and Aishmuqam areas in the same district. Some of the protesters sustained injuries during the action of security forces. At least 17 persons including five women were injured during clashes between the protesters and security forces in the Chotipora village of Handwara area in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Reports said that security forces fired pellets to disperse protesters who had blocked Handwara-Baramulla road at Chotipora. One of the injured was shifted to Srinagar while others are being treated at District Hospital Handwara. Reports said that protests broke out in the Kaloosa village of North Kashmir's Bandipora district. Some of the protesters sustained injuries after police and CRPF personnel used force against them. Protests were also reported from some other places of the valley with some persons sustaining injuries during these incidents. Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 55 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan. |
