Jammu, Aug 18: In the series of parthenium awareness programme, AICRP-Weed Management, SKUAST- Jammu today organized a camp for parthenium weed used as compost at Chatha Farm in which under graduate, Post Graduate students, field staff, farmers and scientific staff participated. Dr B C Sharma, Head, Division of Agronomy who was chief guest in his address emphasized that Parthenium is very hazardous for human, animal and also for crops, but it can be used for several purposes like compost and preparation of biogas, paper etc. Dr B R Bazaya, Incharge, AICRP-Weed Management highlighted that about 35 million hectare land was estimated to be infested with Parthenium at present. he said, "The increase of Parthenium infestation in crop area in recent is alarming and as large biomass of parthenium is available in surroundings of farmers fields in Jammu district, which can be easily utilized for compost before flowering stage and this compost is safe for use." Dr R Puniya, Jr. Scientist, AICRP-Weed Management demonstrated the pit method of parthenium compost preparation. At this occasion Dr A K Gupta, Sr. Scientist, Agronomy, Integrated Farming System also highlighted the importance of compost made from the parethenium.
