Burglars strike JK bank in Kishtwar, decamp with over 34 lacs

Kishtwar Nov 23: In a major bank robbery, unidentified burglars barraged inside the branch of Jammu and Kashmir bank Sarthal last Tuesday night and decamped with cash amounting over Rs. 34 lacs.
The bank branch was located inside private shops at Agral village of Sarthal, about 30 KM from Kishtwar and some unidentified person broke open the shutters of the bank and entered inside decamping with the cash kept inside the chest.
While talking to "Early Times" SSP Kishtwar Sandeep Kumar Wazir said that Police had registered an FIR and started its investigation adding that Rs. 3430987 including cash worth 1788000 of Rs. 2000 denomination, 702000 of old currency of 1000 denomination, 639000 of Rs. 500, 201700 of Rs. 100 notes, one note of Rs. 50, Rs. 100000 of Rs. 20, Rs. 230 of Rs. 10 note and one note each of Rs. 5 & Rs. 2 was taken away by the burglars.
As soon as the news of theft broke , SSP Kishtwar Sandeep Kumar Wazir, Dy. SP HQ Kishtwar Touseef Rishu, SHO Police Station Kishtwar Sameer Jeelani rushed to the spot. The sources said the bank manager kept the keys of the chest inside the drawer which the buglers used for opening the strong room and decamped with cash. The sources said that two sets of three keys each are with cashier and the bank manager while the keys of the outer shutter were with the bank peon. Sources said that 12 bore gun and its rounds belonging to security guard was also kept adjacent to the chest, but the burglars did not touch the said weapon and looted only cash. The sources said that after breaking the locks of one of the shutters, the buglers broke the glass pan and enter inside the bank. Police pressed army dog squad into service to get a clue about the burglars.
After registering the FIR, Kishtwar police detained the bank manager and staff for questioning.
The senior officials of J&K bank including Zonal head and DGM Doda also rushed to the spot and inquired about the incident. The DGM Doda while talking to "Early Times" said that whole staff has been removed and has been directed to report to Police for investigation. The reinforcement of bank employees from Kishtwar has been deputed to the said branch for its hassle free service to the people. He said that any further action with regard to fixing of any responsibility of negligence on part of the bank employees will be taken only by the higher authority .
It is pertinent to mention that this is 2nd major bank robbery in Kishtwar District in last 8 years after infamous 1.0648 crore Kishtwar bank robbery that took place at Jammu and Kashmir Bank Kishtwar in the year 2008. Though Police claims to have solved the said case, but it failed to recover the full cash that was taken away by the burglars.
