Jammu, Dec 31: A new chapter in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir was scripted on October 16 when Omar Abdullah took oath as the first Chief Minister of the newly carved Union Territory.
Although the nation witnessed Lok Sabha elections in the year 2024, this year was important for Jammu and Kashmir as the first popular government was installed in the Union Territory.
The year 2024 marked a historic milestone in Jammu and Kashmir, as the democratic process was revived after an eight-year hiatus, culminating in the formation of a popular government.
This was the first Assembly election held since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The last Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir took place in 2014, leading to a PDP-BJP coalition government under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Jammu, Dec 31: Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir wants to forget the year 2024 as the party has suffered a historic defeat.
J&K Congress suffered the worst defeat in its political history in the 2024 assembly elections. Congress managed to win only six seats in the 90-member assembly, raising serious questions over the existence of the party.
Earlier, the worst performance of the Congress was in the 1996 elections, when the party won seven seats.
However, at that time the party had won from Hindu-dominated constituencies of Jammu province such as Nowshera, Chhamb, Kalakot and Billawar.

Srinagar, Dec 31: The cold wave conditions intensified across Kashmir on Tuesday, with the weather department predicting fresh spells of light to moderate snowfall in the valley over the next week. Gulmarg, a tourist resort town known for skiing activities in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 11.5 degree Celsius which was down one and half degrees from the previous night, the Met department said.

JAMMU, Dec 31: The Office of the Chairperson of the State Allied and Healthcare Council, J&K, has announced the winter vacation schedule for paramedical training institutions in the region.
