In 2024, J&K saw new dawn of democracy, governance | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 31: A new chapter in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir was scripted on October 16 when Omar Abdullah took oath as the first Chief Minister of the newly carved Union Territory. Although the nation witnessed Lok Sabha elections in the year 2024, this year was important for Jammu and Kashmir as the first popular government was installed in the Union Territory. The year 2024 marked a historic milestone in Jammu and Kashmir, as the democratic process was revived after an eight-year hiatus, culminating in the formation of a popular government. This was the first Assembly election held since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The last Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir took place in 2014, leading to a PDP-BJP coalition government under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. However, the region lacked an elected government since June 2018, when the BJP withdrew its support for the PDP-led government, prompting political instability. The legislative assembly was dissolved in November 2018, and President’s Rule was imposed the following month. The 2024 elections brought a significant shift in the political landscape. The National Conference (NC), led by Omar Abdullah, emerged as the single largest party, winning 42 seats in the 90-member legislative assembly. With the support of six Independent members, the NC secured a clear majority, marking the return of single-party dominance in the region after nearly three decades. In the election, the National Conference emerged as the single largest party with 42 seats followed by 29 seats in the kitty of the BJP. The Congress was reduced to only six seats and so was the PDP which got only three seats. One seat each was won by Peoples Conference and CPIM while Independents won seven seats. The successful conduct of elections, characterized by a peaceful atmosphere and record voter turnout, was celebrated as a testament to the resilience of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. Analysts credited the Election Commission of India and local administration for ensuring free and fair elections through robust security and voter awareness campaigns. On October 16, Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. His leadership symbolizes a renewed commitment to stability, development, and self-governance. Abdullah is expected to prioritize pressing issues such as unemployment, infrastructure development, and fostering unity among the region’s diverse communities. The formation of a stable government in Jammu and Kashmir reflects the people’s aspiration for progress and democratic representation. This historic election hailed as a significant achievement, reaffirms the region’s trust in democratic institutions and marks a crucial step toward political stability and development. |
