Bogus voting allegation, NC's worst defeat in JK history stare at his face | Ali Sagar in dock | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 14: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Khurshid Alam, who lost the recent Assembly elections from Khanyar constituency in old city, challenging the victory of the incumbent General Secretary of the National Conference Ali Mohammad Sagar, has put the senior NC leader in a tight spot. Recently Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) directed the Police to investigate into the allegations of bogus voting, leveled by Alam, in Khanyar Assembly segment won by Sagar. "(In charge) Police station Khanyar is directed to hold investigation into the matter," the CJM had said on a complaint filed by runner-up in last Assembly election from the constituency, PDP's Khursheed Alam. "In case cognizable case is disclosed, register FIR and proceed expeditiously," the CJM had said. Sagar was declared winner by a margin of 1167 votes and Alam has alleged that he won on the strength of the bogus votes as he had allegedly managed to accumulate more than 1900 "bogus votes." Sources told Early Times that CJM asking police to investigate the allegations leveled by Alam is giving sleepless nights to the former Rural Development Minister and one of the most powerful men in the National Conference. "Sagar is using his influence to ensure that Police go slow in the case and is trying his best to push the case under the carpet," sources alleged. They said that Alam has got enough evidence to prove that Sagar used "bogus voters" to accumulate more than 1900 votes to ensure his victory from Khanyar, which for the past many years has been considered as Sagar's bastion. Alam, a former trade union leader, gave a tough fight to Sagar in the last assembly polls and came very close to defeating him. Alam in a petition filed before a local court here claimed that he had brought the matter of bogus voters being enrolled in the voter list into the notice of former Deputy Commissioner and then electoral officer Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah besides 19 Block Level Officers. Sources said court entertaining Alam's petition and asking police to take cognizance of the matter can turn the tables on the NC General Secretary. "Allegations leveled by Alam have put the question mark over Sagar's credibility. Sagar at present is holding a very significant position in NC. His opponents within the party are lobbying hard to pull the rag under his feet," said an insider. Sagar, who till the recent past was considered as the face of the National Conference in Srinagar, was appointed as NC General Secretary a few months before polls and had been given all the powers to distribute mandates among the candidates, who contested the 2014 Assembly polls. However, NC faced worst defeat in the electoral history of Jammu and Kashmir and could only manage to bag 15 out of 87 Assembly seats. "NC biting dust in the recent polls has put a question mark on the leadership qualities of Sagar and the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah," said a source. He said NC only managing to win three out of eight seats in Srinagar and losing in its citadels across Kashmir had already put Sagar in an awkward position. "Now the allegations leveled against him by the PDP leader have added to his woes. He (Sagar) is trying to hold the fort but time only would tell how long can he hold it," the source added. |
