| APSCC welcomes decision to constitute SIT to probe 1984’ anti-Sikh riots | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 14: Welcoming the decision of union government to appoint Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe 1984 anti-Sikh riots, All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) has said that many more things need to be done to make the probe meaningful. In a statement, APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina said that probe should be extended to the other parts of India since anti-Sikh riots took place there as well in 1984.
Raina said that it is not Delhi alone where in 1984 Sikhs were massacred, under a politically planned programme but in several parts of the country including Jammu & Kashmir many Sikhs were brutally killed.
"It is good that the SIT has been appointed under the chairmanship of Pramod Asthana and they have been asked submit the report in six months. All those people involved in the crime should be dealt with the law of land. Justice has been denied for the last 30 years to the Sikhs and same speaks volumes about the ignorance of human rights in the country," said APSCC Chairman.
Raina said the incident of killing of Sikhs in 1984 at Talwara ,district Reasi ,in Jammu division of the state cannot be kept at bay. He said members of the Sikh community in the state have been over the past so many years in the state demanding the concerned authorities to take stern action against people involved in 1984 Sikh killings at Talwara, district Reasi, Jammu.
"Killing of innocent Sikhs in 1984 was a politically motivated act of violence against minorities, and even now it appears the present government is doing it under a political agenda. There are open options to deal legally such motivated killings of minorities under set procedures of judiciary," said APSCC Chairman.
Raina said that a multicultural democracy like India functions properly only when the rights of minorities are safeguarded and they are given sufficient protection. He said that minorities in India i.e. Sikhs, Muslims, Jains, Christians, Parsis, and Buddhists should not have a feeling of being the second class citizens of the country. He added that people of these minorities should be given sufficient proof to have total belief in the non-partisan working of the government. |
