LC Polls: NC-Congress to take on PDP-BJP | It's official now | | Rustam Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 15 : The NC and the Congress, which suffered a massive defeat at the hands of the PDP in Kashmir and BJP in Jammu and which contested the February 7 Rajya Sabha elections in J&K jointly to win one of the four seats, are once again thinking in terms of contesting jointly the scheduled Legislative Council elections onMarch 2. In fact, a spokesperson of the NC stated on Saturday that since the PDP and the BJP had reportedly decided to contest the upcoming Legislative Council elections jointly, it was only natural for the NC and the Congress to join hands against the PDP and the BJP and contest the elections jointly. The numbers in the Legislative Assembly are such that the PDP and the BJP could win 9 out of 11 seats in the Council with utmost ease if they contest the election jointly. They would be able to win one more seat in case the PDP and the BJP formed the government before March 2. For, the coalition would have the support of two more nominated women MLAs. Right now the PDP and the BJP share between them 53 seats and have also the support of four more MLAs - two belong to the People's Conference and two independent MLAs, one each from Udhampur in Jammu and Zanskar in Ladakh. The PDP has 28 MLas and the BJP 25. The strength of the PDP-BJP coalition would be 59 in the 89-member Legislative Council in case the government was formed before the polling day. As for the NC and the Congress, they share between them 27 seats and enjoy the support of three more MLAs from Kashmir - CPI-M MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, People's Democratic Forum MLA Hakim Yasin and independent MLA from Langate Er Rashid. The Nc and the Congress have 15 and 12 seats, respectively. Tarigami, Yasin and Rashid had voted for the NC-Congress' common joint candidate and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. The NC and the Congress had fielded three candidates, including Azad, and captured one seat. The NC which had fielded two candidates had to bite dust as it didn't have the required numbers. It was the PDP and the BJP which defeated both the NC candidates. The PDP won another seat and the BJP lost the fourth seat by two votes. Even if the NC and the Congress decide to contest the election together against the PDP and the BJP, they would not win more than one seat. It is obvious that it would be the NC which would be fielding its candidate against the safe seat. In fact, the NC had reportedly supported the candidature of Azad on the understanding that the NC would support the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election and the Congress would support the NC candidates seeking election to the legislative Council elections. If the NC and the Congress were to win two seats, they need 19 votes each, which they do not have. Indeed, it is advantage the PDP and the BJP provided they contest the election together and form the government before March 2 - a possibility which cannot be overruled. After all, the PDP and the BJP are in touch with each other and trying their best to iron out differences between them. |
