BJP leaders rule out third-party intervention for resolving Kashmir issue | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 17: Senior BJP leaders in Jammu and New Delhi have pooh poohed Hurriyat Conference leaders' suggestion to the international community, especially the US, to mediate between India and Pakistan for settling the Kashmir issue. A senior BJP leader, Dr Nirmal Singh, MP, has said that besides US other developed nations had already stated that the issue did not require any international intervention or mediation as it was a bilateral problem. He said that "we believe that the Kashmir issue is settled the day the Maharaja of Kashmir signed the Instrument of Accession" and if there was anything to be discussed it was the issue of Pakistan sponsored insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. Even New Delhi has reacted against Hurriyat leaders' plea for securing international intervention saying that since Islamabad used the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to India New Delhi has closed any option for discussing the Kashmir issue. Reports from New Delhi indicate that the BJP led NDA Government is in favour of promoting cordial ties with Islamabad and in this connection Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has sent the foreign secretary, S Jaishankar to Islamabad for detailed discussion in bilateral issues. According to these reports, New Delhi was prepared to discuss the Kashmir misuse but let Islamabad remain flexible during talks. Instead of wasting time and energy on discussing the Kashmir issue the two need to discuss the Indus Water Treaty, Siachen and Sir Creek. Referring to the Indus Water Treaty Dr Nirmal Singh said that the Treaty entails over Rs.8,000 crore annual loss to Jammu and Kashmir because it has not been able to utilize fully water from river Jehlum, Chenab and Indus for power generation and for lift irrigation schemes..He said that there is need for discussing whether the Treaty calls for amendment as its provisions are biased against the state of Jammu and Kashmir. |
