Cong, NC leaders to check BJP-PDP machinations | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 23 : Though a section of senior Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir are unhappy over the way the party leadership has directed all the 12 MLAs to support the National Conference nominees for the Legislative council elections, there is a general feeling among the rank and file in the state unit of the Congress that keeping alliance with the National Conference intact was the only way to prevent it from suffering rapid erosion in its vote bank. Party sources said that the emphasis on retaining the six year old alliance between the National Conference and the Congress is the result of fears gripping both the parties that they may not be able to survive in isolation of each other. Since the stage is being set for a six-year term for the BJP-PDP Government the NC and the Congress have to take steps for facing new challenges from the ruling coalition and that too when the Muftis continue to lead all those section of politicians and people who are opposed to the National Conference. According to these sources, the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz has been asked by the party high command to ensure that all the 12 Congress MLAs supported the NC nominees so that the NC is able to win one to two seats in the legislative council. Soz has been asked to bury whatever differences with the Ghulam Nabi Azad. Even Azad has been told to work for unity in the state unit of the Congress so that it can face any and every challenge from the BJP-PDP ruling coalition. Both Soz and Azad have been told to intensify their anti-BJP and anti-PDP campaign in the Kashmir valley so that the PDP's vote bank suffered major erosion on the ground of its sharing power with a "communal" party. However, senior BJP and PDP leaders said that the only way to blunt the Congress-NC attack was to provide a stable and successful Government in Jammu and Kashmir. |
