Congress high command supports GA Mir as new PCC Chief | | | Jammu, Mar 1 :Ghulam Ahmed Mir former Congress Minister and having a large vote bank in south Kashmir, is likely to replace Saif-ud-Din Soz as PCC Chief. Party sources said that after the Party high command has accepted Soz's request for relieving him of the PCC President's post G.A.Mir,who has the tacit support from Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, may be appointed as the new PCC Chief. Party sources said that both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have supported Mir in the past because the two leaders have faith in his capacity for running the congress organization in the state. Though there are a number of party lead ers who are senior to Mir as far as age and experience are concerned but the party high command has faith in the quality of leadership that Mir could provide. Since Mir has the support from Azad this could resolve the problem of conflict between the loyalists and the dissidents.Since Saif-ud-Din Soz has functioned as the PCC Chief for about eight years the party high command wants the state unit of the Congress to be run by a young leader.Mir is young and honest.Reports said that Soz loyalists have requested Soz not to quit as the party had entered into a new phase after its loss in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. But Soz is determined to work as an ardent Congress activist.According to these reports, since the Congress high command wants the party to maintain its alliance with the National Conference the tie-up could be further promoted under the leadership of G.A. Mir and not under Soz.The National Conference lead ership does not trust Soz but it does have faith in the leadership of Azad.Hence even the NC would support the Congress high command's plan of inst alling G.A.Mir as president of the PCC in Jammu and Kashmir. |
