Can BJP desist from playing second fiddle to PDP? | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, March 1: On the hind side of euphoria within BJP to have assumed power in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time, there are apprehensions that BJP that represents Jammu region in the Government, did not start playing second fiddle to its coalition partner PDP; the indication of which was evident in the list of Cabinet Ministers, in which 11 names were from the PDP and merely 5 from the BJP. Beyond the list of cabinet Ministers, however, the apprehensions are not unfounded because the history stands testimony to the fact that the Ministers from Jammu, which invariably belonged to Congress in the previous governments with National Conference and PDP have succumbed to the lust for power and have given in to the political interests of the Valley leadership to remain in power. Issues of West Pakistan refugees, Peoples' Representation Act, Delimitation of constituencies, Shri Amarnath land row and many more, have witnessed week kneed response from the Ministers of Jammu representing Congress. Besides the baggage of history, BJP's inexperience in ruling the state is also amplifying the anxiety. BJP is coming to power for the first time and except for Bali Bhagat, Lal Singh and Sukhanandan Choudhary, none of the others in the Council of Ministers has been a Legislator before; On the other hand, most of the Ministers from PDP have been legislators and Ministers before. Lal Singh who was a Congress MP before he crossed over to BJP was also a Minister in the Congress-PDP coalition government and had a controversial tenure as Minister for Health, though his very inclusion in the BJP's list of Ministers has infuriated many his venomous utterances against the top BJP leadership and also charges of land grabbing against him. The huge stand down that BJP has made from its stated position on certain crucial issues to enter into a coalition with PDP has not given an opportunity to its political rivals to attack it, but also raised the questions in the minds of people it represents that how far it can bend to keep the coalition intact without compromising the interests and sentiments of its electorate. |
