Land mafia grabs irrigation land, officials give a damn | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Mar 1: Hundreds of hectors of irrigation land at Phalote and Chack Sheikhan in Kathua has been grabbed by land mafia but officials of the irrigation department give a damn about it. D9 and Old BP Canal and many other such canals have been completely grabbed by some commoners and influential persons but despite having the knowledge of all such encroachment cases, nothing has been done by irrigation department to take action against the grabbers. I &FC department, Jammu, under the supervision of Irrigation Division, Kathua, set up a hoarding near Old BP Canal that states: "It is for the information of general public that the land on 55 ft left and 55 ft right from the centre of the Old BP Canal belongs to irrigation department. Anybody found encroaching the irrigation land shall be prosecuted under the provision of J&K Water resource & Management Act, 2010. But nothing has been done practically to take action against the land mafia. Huge buildings (both government and private), shops, commercial complexes and private schools have come up on the irrigation land here but no one in the department is bothered about it. When contacted, Kathua DC Shaheed Iqbal informed that a meeting was convened to launch anti-encroachment drive in the city. "People have lodged several complaints against encroachers in the city. The administration has issued instructions to all departments to submit a list of encroachments," he added. He ensured strict action against the encroachers. |
