Despite snow, rain, Kashmir highway through for one-way traffic | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 1: Despite fresh snowfall and rain, the National Highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for one-way traffic. ''We have allowed vehicles from Srinagar to Jammu this morning, though it was snowing on both sides of the Jawhar tunnel,'' a traffic police official told. Meanwhile, dozens of far-flung and remote villages in north Kashmir remained cut off with their respective district and tehsil headquarters due to snow. The Mughal road, linking south Kashmir with Jammu region, also remained closed while traffic on the National Highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir, also remained suspended since December last year due to snow. Traffic police official said few inches of fresh snowfall was reported on both sides of the tunnel, Banihal and Shaitannallah, while it was raining in Ramban and Ramsu areas. However, he said, hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, left Srinagar for Jammu. Large number of empty trucks and oil tankers at Qazigund and other places on this side of the tunnel also left for Jammu early this morning. He said in case of heavy snowfall, traffic on the highway would be suspended as a precautionary measure to avoid any accident. No vehicle was allowed from Jammu as only one-way traffic will continue on the highway till further orders to avoid traffic jam and accidents. |
