'Sheher-e Khaas' residents join hands to make city 'Pollution free' | Earth Day Message | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 21: Resident from Kathi Darwaza -an old city locality situated in close vicinity of Central Jail Srinagar today joined hands to protect their area from pollution by electing a self help group called Civil Society Kathi Darwaza with an aim is to ensure proper sanitation and pollution free Kathi Darwaza. Old city also called Sheher e Khaas or "Down Town" is considered to be the soul of Srinagar in view of its heritage and culture and history which with passage of time lost its glory as the concrete jungle ate up its pristine glory. Affluent and families from this area shifted to other areas of Srinagar where new residential colonies started coming up right from early 70's while commercial hub of Srinagar i.e. Lal Chowk also became heart of Srinagar during 1970's and the continuous shifting of noted persons from all walks of life to other areas of Srinagar virtually orphaned the Sheher- e- Khaas. Following which all eyes remained focused on newly developing areas and the old city i.e. Sheher e Khaas suffered a lot due to non execution of various developmental works. Not only this, the authorities even failed to protect the rich cultural heritage of old city and some important historical buildings, bridges etc which consequently were demolished. It was not only the fault of the Government but the Valleyites also were equally responsible for all present environmental crises in old city. "As conscious citizens we have never come forward to help ourselves and instead have been blaming Government authorities only, said Dr Mushtaq Khan Chairman of Civil Society Kathi Darwaza. Dr Khan said, "We keep using polythene , throwing and dumping waste material on road sides , encroaching water bodies etc. We always have been waiting for SMC sweepers to clean garbage. How is it possible that a handful of "Safai Karamcharis "will ensure removal of all the garbage in our locality especially when the population has increased manifold, he said and added, "for restoring its glory we have to stand up now." People residing at under the foothills of Hari Parbat Fort were suffering a lot due to dog menace, water logging, dumping of waste material etc joined hands together against this menace few months back and formed "Civil Society Kathi Darwaza". The volunteers from this society themselves are taking initiatives to the maintain hygiene and sanitation on Sunday. Dr Mushtaq Khan a prominent RTI activist and a renowned consultant/Dental Surgeon of Old city formed this group which is undertaking initiatives for sanitation by clearing rubble , polythene and other waste material from the lanes of their locality. " We had a problem of dog menace in the area and every now and then we thought of killing these stray dogs , but as we kept cleaning our locality the dogs automatically left from our area. We are also thankful to former SMC Commissioner Dr Qasaba for providing us with garbage dumpers which are used to dump all the waste material" said Parvez Ahmad Dar a member of Civil Society Kathi Darwaza while talking to Early Times The civil society group is now planning for a campaign to ensure their locality a polythene free area and for this work the volunteers are roping in support of local Masjid Imams and Gurdawara Committee Members who would be requested to speak about hazards of polythene during their religious sermons. |
