Forest department disappoints flood affected people of South Kashmir | Fails to sanction timber in their favour | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report ANANTNAG, Apr 21: Despite the lapse of over seven months since September-2014 floods that devastated Kashmir, Forest department has miserably failed to distribute timber among flood sufferers. A delegation from Bijbehara told Early Times that department has not provided them the timber despite suffering heavy damages in the last year flood. The members of the delegation said that their names figure in the list forwarded to department by Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, but still then they were not provided the timber. "I suffered damage too due to floods last year but department didn't provided me the timber. On the other people having affiliation with particular political parties were given the timber," said Bashir Ahmad, a member of the delegation. Most of the delegation members said that department provided timber to those flood sufferers who own their allegiance with political leaders and parties while as the deserving were left out. Locals in Hassanpora-Subhanpora, Arwani also complained that the department hasn't yet distributed the timber among the flood sufferers whose houses got collapsed and suffered damages due to floods. "Almost all the time you can see flood sufferers visiting the offices of forest department but their pleas and requests goes unheard," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a Bijbehara youth adding government must prioritize the rehabilitation of flood victims. DFO Lidder, Himayun Qadri on being contacted, acknowledged that many sufferers are yet to receive timber. "We distributed around 97,000 cubic feet of timber among flood sufferers against the target of 1.31 lakh cft. So there are many families who haven't received the timber." Blaming damage assessing authorities for the delay he said, "We received list of flood sufferers in the month of March which witnessed rains etc still we did our best but the fault lies with assessing authorities who took much time in providing us the list." The DFO assured that the timber distribution among the flood sufferers will be taken up in the next month. "We will resume the distribution of timber among flood victims in the next month again. We are hopeful that till government will come with a strategy regarding the enhancement of rates and other things." |
