Will Modi break ice with Jinping ? | | | Though Chinese President Xi Jinping, had an informal meeting with Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, who has landed in China on a three-day visit,it may not be an easy task for Modi to break the ice with the reticent Chinese leaders and that too when during the last 53 years Beijing has adopted tough postures against India. In fact Modi's mind is filled with issues that display his interest in facilitating cordial ties between China and India. He is aware of China's plans for infrastructure projects in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK),still Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hoped that his visit to China will set a "new milestone" for Asia.Modi, who is undertaking his first visit to China as Prime Minister, reached the ancient city of Xi'an, the home town of President Xi Jinping, for a summit meeting, an unusual departure from normal protocol and seen as a reciprocal gesture by the Chinese leader who was hosted by Modi in Ahmedabad when he visited India in September last year."I am looking forward to the trip to China... the 21st century belongs to Asia," the Prime Minister told Chinese media ahead of his visit. Modi has shown his grace by not reacting to the adverse comments some Chinese newspapers had carried against India in general and Modi in particular. In a Chinese newspaper n article appeared a day two days before Modi was to land in China which said that the Indians were "inferior" people and Prime Minister,Narendra Modi is playing "little" tricks on the boundary dispute and should no longer visit Arunachal Pradesh. In fact the Chinese newspaper has simply articulated Beijing's intentions as China has, over the years, been claiming that Arunachal Pradesh is part of China. New Delhi rightly dismissed the media report something that does not deserve any attention because the news item was not based on comments or observation from any Chinese official or ruling leader.Instead of reacting against the media report Modi hoped that his visit will "further deepen" India-China relations and set a "new milestone" for Asia and developing countries."I believe that my trip to China will not only deepen the China-India friendship, but also set a new milestone for the relations between developing countries in Asia as well as around the world. There is no doubt about that," he told state-run CCTV ahead of this visit. He said India and China have made great progress in bilateral relations in recent years and managed their differences with patience and maturity. Modi's visit to China has assumed added significance in the light of growing tension and conflict on Indo-China border in Ladakh and in Arunachal Pradesh.Well as far as China's commitment on providing military and non-military aid to Pakistan was concerned it was an internal matter for Beijing notwithstanding the fact that military aid to Pakistan from China could harm the interests of India. What India in general and Modi in particular want is immediate settlement of the boundary dispute between India and China.Let China stop l.aying claim on Arunachal Pradesh and on some far-flung border areas in Ladakh. In reality the era of Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai may get a rebirth if Beijing and New Delhi resolve the border dispute on the basis of some give and take. This is possible if China stops acting as a big brother while dealing with the border issues with India.Let there be a spirit of accommodation, adjustment and flexibility on the part of China. This can be possible if Beijing realizes that cordial ties with India could lay new foundation for economic revolution in both the countries. |
