People protest as rain water enters their shops | | | Early Times Report
MENDHAR, May 14: A strong protest was held by the business community against PWD and panchayat department here today after the rain water entered 30-40 shops in the town, damaging articles worth lakhs. As it rained heavily in the town in the morning, the roads and lanes got flooded. Since the drains were already choked, the rain water entered 30-40 shops in the town. Shopkeepers and customers also remained trapped inside these shops for over three hours. Sawhney Book Shop and Sawhney Electronics suffered the maximum damage. TVs, refrigerators, invertors and mobiles worth lakhs were damaged in the Sawhney Electronics, official sources said, quoting the shop owner. The incident sparked off strong resentment in the town with the shopkeepers holding a strong protest against PWD and Panchayat Department. They said PWD had failed to streamline the drainage system in the town while the panchayat department had also miserably failed to carry out regular cleanliness drives here. Later, Mendhar Tehsildar, Dr Khabir visited the damaged shops and spoke to the protesters. He assured them to look into the matter. He said he would also asked the BDO why the cleanliness of the town was not being carried on regular basis. The protesters later dispersed peacefully. |
