Tawi Trekkers releases calendar of activities

JAMMU, May 14: Tawi Trekkers, the biggest trekking club in Jammu and Kashmir, today released its annual calendar of activities in a well attended function held here. The calendar was unfolded by Prof Lalit Magotra in the presence of other guests and Principals of the institutions associated with different activities of the Club.
Earlier, senior vice president of the club, Ram Khajuria highlighted the activities to be undertaken during 1015-16. He mentioned that since the Himalayan Trekking Programme of the Club, wherein over 12,000 boys and girls have so far participated, has completed 25 years, the club would commemorate the year by holding 25 activities.
The major activities included two Silver Jubilee Himalayan Trekking Programmes one each at the beautiful Moungri area of Udhampur for 500 children and Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh for about 250 school children during summer vacations. Two other trekking expeditions in Dhauladhar Range in Himachal Pradesh for junior and senior members besides regular short treks and visits to heritage sites and quiz, debate and painting competitions are also part of the programme.
The major attraction of the year would, however, be a North Zone Sport Climbing competition for specially able children (blind children). The event shall be organized in cooperation with Indian Mountaineering Foundation, North Zone Committee, New Delhi in the month of October and November.
"To spot the talent in sport climbing at the grass root level and to groom it for future competitions the club has an ambitious plan of conducting regular coaching cum practice camps in co-ordination with Mountaineering Association of J&K at Sprawling Buds School, Jammu. Those excelling in such camps shall also be deputed for coaching and practice at international standard climbing walls at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi. A state level sport climbing competition shall also be conducted by Tawi Trekkers at Sprawling Buds School in the month of November," he informed.
While releasing the calendar the Prof Lalit Magotra, who is also founder member and advisor of the Club, hoped that with concerted efforts of the club and Mountaineering Association of J&K and generous sponsorship of various activities by the J&K State Sports Council, the state would again become a formidable force in sport climbing and mountaineering at the national level.
He complimented the club for doing commendable work in the field of adventure with increased vigour, year after year, for the last 32 years. He also expressed his gratitude to the management of various schools especially Sprawling Buds School, for their help and active cooperation to the club for the smooth conduct and promotion of adventure activities.
Principals of Sprawling Buds School, Oriental Academy Higher Secondary School, Shangrilla Public School, Sarwal and St. Xavier Senior Secondary School, Barnai, who were special guests on the occasion assured their help and full cooperation to the club for the smooth conduct of its various activities.
General secretary of Tawi Trekkers, Shawetica Khajuria welcomed the guests and also gave a brief detail about the activities conducted by the Club during the last 32 years in general and in the year 2014 in particular. The function was compared by joint secretary of the Club, Sonam Sidharth.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Director of Sprawling Buds School, Rahul Sharma, President Dogri Sanstha, Jammu, Chhatarpal, Yogeshwar Kumar and Sushil Singh, vice president and treasurer respectively of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Rakesh Goswami, Navneet Gupta, Shakti Singh Jamwal and founder members of the club, RBS Jamwal, Virender Magotra and Rajinder Singh Jamwal.
