HC seeks revised rules of stone quarrying in 2 weeks | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 14: The state High Court has granted government two weeks time for informing about the revised rules regarding stone quarrying in the state. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench comprising Chief Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey granted the time till June 2 after advocate general R A Jan submitted the government endeavors to carrying some amendments in the draft rules particularly in the allotment of quarrying on first come first basis by the previous regime. The court also granted government time for informing the court about the steps taken for rehabilitation of those persons affected by stopping the quarrying work. Last year, the Financial Commissioner Industries and Commerce Department had informed the court that the government has formed districts level committees for Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kupwara and Pulwama to identify alternative sites for stone quarrying these districts. However, the Commissioner Secretary said that due to the floods and elections, the matter could not be pursued by the committees. The court had directed the District level Committees, constituted for identifying the alternate sites for allotment of land to the affected persons for installing quarries there, to expedite the process and furnish report within two weeks' time. The Division Bench was hearing a PIL filed by one Sofi Arif Maqbool, a resident of Kupwara, seeking an end to quarrying in forest demarcated areas in the state. |
