Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 12: With the traffic mess taking toll in the Srinagar city, the state authorities on Friday said the comprehensive plan is in the offing that will be implemented within days to put lid over the traffic crises.
Talking to media persons, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Samoon said that the divisional authorities have made it a priority to make Srinagar a city wherein no more traffic mess could be witnessed.
Days after the Jahangir Chowk- Rambagh route was closed for the vehicular movement, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir said that the most challenging job for the administration was the channelization of the traffic in such a way that no more chaos is witnessed on the Srinagar streets.
"In the initial phase there was serious scarcity of manpower felt in the traffic department. We had to get additional manpower to tackle with the crises that was in the offing. Gradually, at present, the change is being felt and there will be improvement in the situation during the days to come," Samoon said. Hinting strict steps to counter encroachment of footpath resulting in eating up of existing roads in summer capital, he further maintained that there will be no comprise over the issue and added the foot paths need to be freed from the encroachments so that no pedestrian movement is affected.
"Public (Pedestrians) have first right on the footpaths. Tell me where they (people) would go if traffic ply on roads and foot paths continue to remain encroached by the local vendors," he said.
He remarked further that though the government would later on provide some space to the local vendors in a bid of not to affect their livelihood but at present, the priority of the state dispensation is to free Srinagar from the rising traffic mess and to ensure smooth traffic and vehicular movement.
Dr Samoon stated further that some deluxe buses would ply on various city routes so that commuters may get comfortable ride particularly on city arteries connecting the major hospitals of the city of Srinagar.
