Martyrs of Tanda Tiger Force remembered | | | Early Times Report Tanda, July 26: Rich tributes were paid to the martyrs of 'Tanda Tiger Porter Force' on the occasion of 16th Kargil Vijay Divas, at Tanda, the place of origin of this volunteer force in a meeting held under the Chairmanship of K P Singh. Homage was paid to seven volunteers who laid down their lives while helping the army as porters in Kargil conflict. They carried army's ammunition, stores and rations up the high mountains in war zone. Rich tributes were also paid to all others for their spontaneous response and active role in the service of nation without knowing what is in store for them. Main essence of the meeting was that they have made 'History' of which J&K is proud of even if it has not been formally recognised at the national level. Two minutes silence was held for the fallen heroes. It may be recalled that 'Tanda Tiger Force' was raised in the first week of June 1999 from Jammu region, in an emergency situation, to augument the manpower required for carrying army's ammunition, stores, heavy loads and rations uptill the forward assault lines. In order to meet the urgent requirement of raising six Porter Companies of 600 each, Brig R S Chauhan, Commander 71 Sub Area Udhampur contacted K P Singh, known social activist, to assist in the tough task of getting the volunteers as porters. Biting the bait, K P Singh exhorted the youths to come forward at the time of reckoning. He used all his abilities and contacts to exhort unemployed youths to meet army's demand. He led first batch of over 400 volunteers to Udhampur on 8 June 1999 for Kargil. He was returned from Udhampur and asked to stay back and get more volunteers. Later the enrolment continued under the aegis of Akhnoor Div and nearly 2,500 porters were enrolled in a short time at Tanda as Porters. Paying homage to the martyrs, K P Singh stated that first to be martyred was Kamlesh Kumar of village Hakla (Chatha). Later Daler Singh, Madan Singh and Parduman Singh (all cousins) of village Kulo (Samba), Sham Singh of Ramnagar, Khangdra Singh of Nepal and Tsering Motup of Ladakh did proud to their families and the nation. They are no less than Batras, Pandeys, Kalias and 527 martyrs. Their names also have been written in golden letters in the annals of military history said K P Singh. |
