BJP's Kashmir unit believes in exaggeration of figures of its members | 'Crowd' more than real activists of party | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 29: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) unit in the Kashmir valley seems to be over the moon over the fact that lakhs of people have enrolled themselves as members of the party. Truth of the matter is that only few hundred are 'active' BJP workers with the rest being part of the 'crowd'. Sources told Early Times that BJP office bearers in Kashmir are interested in counting the heads and not worried about the intelligence of the people joining them. In most of the cases it has been observed that money power has been used to lure people to party ranks and inflate the membership of the party in Kashmir with the real cadre not being much. The exaggeration of the figures as put forward by BJP Kashmir unit with regard to its membership got exposed during the public rally addressed by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in December last year. The rally was held in the midst of 2014 Assembly elections, but still then the party could just ensure participation of 8,000-10,000 people. "When a Prime Minister comes to address a rally at a sensitive place like Kashmir it is important that appreciable number of people turn up to listen to him. During that rally not more than 10,000 people turned and it was no less than an embarrassment for the party especially for its Kashmir unit," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that BJP after forming the Government in the State with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) embarked on registering more and more members across the state. As on date the party leadership claims that they have enrolled more than one lakh members in the Kashmir valley and not to talk of the Jammu division where the claims about membership are much more. "Mere enrolment of members is not enough. How many among these people are serious enough in carrying forward the agenda of the BJP. Let the party organize a public rally in Srinagar or any other part of Kashmir and one can easily see the participation of BJP workers in such a meeting. The party men know it fully well that when they cannot draw more than 10,000 people for PM rally how can they attract more people as and when the public rally is organized," said sources. Sources said that the people who could have made a difference to the BJP's fortunes with respect to its membership drive have taken a back seat. These people who are well versed in education and also in politics are not interested in managing the affairs of the party. The basic reason is that less educated and 'renegade' elements have been given more than due encouragement in the party set up. "Well read people are welcome in every sphere of life, but somehow it does not hold true for BJP unit in Jammu & Kashmir more so Kashmir valley. The people who do not know how to talk and how to communicate with the others have been given important posts in the party set up. On the other hand the educated lot has been relegated to the back bench," said sources. |
