KCC&I demands action against ITC for defaming brand 'KASHMIR' | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Pitching for action against tobacco giant Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) on Saturday took a dig at the company saying that it has abused the name of Kashmir by inscribing the word 'Kashmir' on the cigarette packs owned by the company. "The KCC&I expresses its grave concern over the promotion of the hazardous tobacco/a particular brand of cigarette by the Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) through exploiting the name of Kashmir and its beauty on the cigarette packets," said Javed Ahmad Tenga, Joint Secretary General KCC&I. Javed said that 'GOLD FLAKE' brand cigarette carries 'My Kashmir My Paradise' advertisement on its cigarette packets with a Shikara in Dal Lake and Tulip garden shown in the background. He said such advertisement is obviously pre-posteriors and is an open insult and abuse to the name Kashmir by promoting a commodity which is scientifically established health hazardous/cancerous causing diseases and pre-mature death. "The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Inc) would therefore impress upon the government to take stern action against the ITC. Not only the current advertisement in cigarette packets is withdrawn but all the packets of cigarette now in circulation in the market bearing the above mentioned advertisement are immediately withdrawn from all the markets in the Kashmir valley," said Joint Secretary General KCC&I. Javed said that in addition to this the state government should take legal action against the ITC charging the company for damages since harm has been caused to the name and fame of Kashmir by promoting name 'Kashmir' on the cigarette packs. He said action at this point of time would ensure that mischievous acts are not repeated in future and that name as well as fame of Kashmir is not dented. At the same time most of the players associated with the tourism and travel industry have castigated ITC for promotion of the advertisement that according to them has brought a bad name to brand 'Kashmir'. These stakeholders too have demanded action against the company so that it acts a deterrent for the future. "All the good work done by the various stakeholders in bringing people to Kashmir from different parts of India and abroad would be wasted by such acts. Kashmir is known for its beauty and using the same name on the cigarette packs is all set to distaste the entire scenario of hope and possibilities. The state government should not waste any time and ensure that strict action under laws is taken against the company and its higher ups," said a group of tourism and travel players. |
