Only Bihar, Odhisa have bad sanitation than J&K | | | ET Report SRINAGAR, Nov 21: The State of Jammu Kashmir is ahead of Odhisa and Bihar as far as sanitation is concerned. A national survey on drinking water and sanitation reflects that half of the population of the State has no access to toilets and wash rooms. According to the survey, of the twenty lakh households in the State, only ten lakh have toilets and washrooms. The problem is grave in rural areas where people defecate in open. The situation in urban areas is a litter better. Of 5.17 lac households, only 4.52 lac households have latrines within premises. Rest go to public latrines. Shockingly the problem is felt in Government run offices and institutions. Data furnished by the District Information System for Education (DISE Survey 2014-15), 6,351 girl schools have no toilets. Similarly 8,098 boys schools have no toilets. A RTI recently revealed that several police stations also lack drinking water and toilets. It also revealed that 49 posts and 23 police stations are without any drinking water facility in the State. The experts ascribe reasons to lethargy of the State Government. The Government has failed to utilise funds provided under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. According to official data only Rs. 4.66 crore out of Rs. 121.52 crore were utilised. Medical experts believe that gastro ailments especially in rural areas were due to lack of toilets and drinking water. |
