Let India and Pakistan avoid getting frozen in the past | | | This time India seems to be quite serious and sincere in resolving some of the bilateral problems with Pakistan and that too through sustained talks. In fact the External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, is right when she said that these bilateral problems cannot be settled through one round of talks. There is need for having several rounds of talk and that too over a period of time. India is not in a hurry to clinch the issue and so should not be Pakistan. And it is upto Pakistan to reciprocate India's renewed bid for the resumption of stalled talks. This can be done if Pakistan shuts down arms training camps where militants are provided arms training before they were pushed into Jammu and Kashmir. Secondly, Islamabad should ensure that the soil of Pakistan was not used for exporting terror to India, particularly to Jammu and Kashmir. The statement that Sushma Swaraj gave in the Lok Sabha deserve appreciation as she declared that "war is not an option", and that is the reason that India had decided to hold dialogue with Pakistan as it is the only way to remove "the shadow of terrorism". Sushma Swaraj said in Lok Sabha that India and Pakistan decided to hold talks on terror when the Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif met in Ufa (Russia) in July and then in Paris recently. India has made it clear to Pakistan that the two sides should talk so that terrorism comes to an end . So talks (between NSAs) took place in Bangkok where the two sides discussed about terrorism. But one meeting will not bring a solution to all the problem. So we will continue the dialogue. When BJP member Ganesh Singh asked whether India was exploring options like the US did to hunt down terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, Swaraj said India is talking to Pakistan on the militant camps existing in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) as "War is not an option". India has decided that through talks the two sides will resolve the issue of terrorism as talks is the way forward so that the shadow of terror is removed. But we want to make it clear that our Prime Minister has made it clear that talks and terror can't go together. Dialogue is drowned by the sound of explosion," she said. Swaraj was speaking against the backdrop of recent decision to re-start the 'Comprehensive' dialogue with Pakistan under which various subjects, including terrorism and Jammu and Kashmir, will be discussed. This means that in the proposed talks India will wish to focus on terrorism and the ways to be adopted for ending the menace of terror. Hitherto, there has been some positive response from Pakistan when Pakistan National SecurityAdviser, Lt Gen. Naseer Janjua described his meeting with Ajit Doval "good beginning." He said that it was important if the two sides do not remain frozen in the past. What is laudable on the part of Janjua is his sermon "let us think of the future. Let us do it ourselves.Let us not leave it to our children." Islamabad has appointed Naseer Janjua as National SecurityAdviser and this indicates that Nawaz Sharif is keen to take the Army on board because hitherto whenever India and Pakistanb moved a step in the right direction Army in Pakistan would trigger some conflict thereby sabotaging the process of dialogue. |
