Minister's 'meaningless' governance talk | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 18: A senior minister today talked about decentralisation of powers in the state. He was referring to the forthcoming local body polls which the government intends to hold shortly. He said it has been the endeavor to involve the people at grass-root level in policy formulation, implementation and day to day governance which forms the basis of any democratic setup. For the information of the minister, there are no takers for such sugar coated pills. The Panchayati elections were held in the state during he NC led government. Some precious lives were lost but the panchayat members never got the powers they needed to take democracy to the grass root level. In the coming months the DP-BJP government will be completing one year in office but the plight of the panchayat members has not changed. They continue to suffer in one way or the other. According to reports received from the rural areas, the panchs and the sarpanchs are not even allowed inside the block development offices. A peon chases them away, reports available with Early Times suggest. In such a scenario when the Minister talks of taking governance to the common people, it makes no sense. Before taking the people to a make believe world in the garb of taking democracy to the commoner in the urban areas, the government better empower the panchayats. The Minister also assured electrification of the villages which have yet to enjoy the benefits of electricity. This did bring a smile on the lips of the innocent villagers but a question arises. Where is he power for such villages? The Minister better explain. |
