One hospital enough to belie Govt claims | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 18: Amid tall claims of the state health ministry of making JK a better place for public healthcare, the maternity patients at SK Institute of Medical Science Medical College in Bemina, Srinagar bely these assertions. While entering the hospital, one becomes familiar with the worsening health scenario of the state with pregnant women being made to suffer . The scenes also go contrary to the much hyped hospital visits of the incumbent health minister who amid much fanfare has been claiming to transform the health sector of the state. Inside the hospital, one would find three ladies sharing one bed. Due to lack of infrastructure, many patients are provided beds in the corridor of the Labor ward, exposing them to the worst risk of infection and other complications. So far, there has been no action taken vis-a-vis ensuring any betterment in the facilities being provided to the patients who could not afford the private medical care during pregnancy. Doctors who fear the wrath of state authorities for exposing such worrisome situation told Early Times on the condition of anonymity that it is due to high referrals from villages and that the hospital has thirty patients in the Labour ward alone. The Gynae ward of the hospital where women are shifted after delivery, too adds to the miseries of the patients. There is just a single washroom for the entire ward. One of the patient said that after undergoing a major caesarian face lot of problems as the women expecting babies cannot use Indian toilets which are installed in the hospital. "Post-operation, there is a risk of breaking the stitches but the authorities care a little about the plight of the patients," one of the doctors told Early Times. Furthermore, amid the bone chilling cold, the hospital has no heating system in place for the patients, thus adding one more dimension to their perturbed state of mind. Also, none of the washrooms in Gynecology, Pediatric and Chest Disease wards have any geysers for hot water, causing grave inconvenience in chilling cold. With such a picture coming to fore about the health sector of the state, how could the state authorities claim to be ensuring betterment in such a vital field. When contacted , the Medical Superintedent stated that the bathrooms in the hospital are being renovated with hot running water to be made available. |
