Locals resent prolonged power cuts in Rajouri | | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Dec 18: Inhabitants of several areas in Rajouri district have been complaining about the acute shortage of regular supply and prolonged unscheduled power cuts. Locals alleged that the official curtailment by the Power Development Department (PDD) is for 8 hours in a day while Northern Grid officials have added two hours ( one hour each in morning and evening hours) more curtailment while between 4-5 hours unscheduled power cuts to avoid overloading on the transformers making it more than 14 hours a day. "Power curtailment for more than 14 hours in a day has badly hit the studies of the students and had worst effect on the businessmen dependent on electricity" said Yogesh Sharma social activist and former -BJP district unit head. It needs to mention resenting power curtailments, the residents of village Dodaj in Darhal Assembly Constituency on Thursday held a protest demonstration before the Office of Deputy Commissioner. They also alleged that their area is witnessing blackout for the last two months since the power supply is snapped about two months back due to technical snag in the transformer while the department till date has failed to restore it. "The matter has also been brought into the notice of tehsil administration and the concerned PDD officials but nothing has been done to mitigate our problems," said Shokat Ali one among the protesters adding, "students are the worst sufferers whose final examinations are approaching soon and facing many hardships in studying under candle lights and kerosene oil lamps." Another villager namely Dil Pazeer said that PDD has been sending bills for the period despite there was no power supply in the locality. He said the matter has also been raised before the Deputy Commissioner who assured to take up the matter concerned authorities to resume power soon and cancel the bills for this period. Similar reports of protest are reported from Kural, Keri and many other villages which are without electricity for the last four days. Vinod Sharma and Narendra Kumar while expressing their resentment over the poor working and the casual approach of the PDD officials said that PDD employees are just after their salaries that too without any work on the ground. "The power has been snapped to these areas due to technical fault and it was hoped that soon the power will be restored as the employees are on the job to rectify the fault" said J Sassan, JE while talking to reporters. Inhabitants of Sunderbani tehsil and town also raising their voice against unscheduled power curtailment for hours together and warned large scale protest demonstration if the power was not restored as per scheduled power curtailment. Meanwhile K Singh, SDM, Sunderbani has assured the people to take up the matter with the concerned PDD officials so that the unscheduled power curtailment may be stopped and people must get uninterrupted supply as per scheduled power cuts. The sub standard Transformers supplied under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyut Yojna (RGGVY) is termed the main root cause of power shut downs. "During last about three years 400 such transformers have developed technical snags out of which 272 have been repared while 128 are still lying in the workshop" said Gurmeet Singh. |
