'Birbal' loses spokesman's post as his ideas backfire | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 22: The Education Minister, NaeemAkther, who hogged the headlines for wrong reasons during the tenure of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and attained the status of "Birbal" for floating different ideas has reportedly lost the post of PDP's chief spokesman due to his "ideas" embarrassing the party. The ideas which NaeemAkther floated in his first stint as the Education Minister backfired as teacher community didn't like his idea to conduct the screening tests for all the teachers. NaeemAkther's another decision to ban the private tuitions for the government teachers left the students in lurch who wanted to prepare for the competitive examinations. The CM's Super-50 initiative which was launched with pomp and show to provide free coaching to the students during winter proved to be a big disappointment for the students. Akther, who was the chief spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), failed miserably to discharge his duties as a spokesman after the PDP came into power. Most of the time he remained inaccessible and failed to handle the sensitive issues like Handwara incident. He failed to defend the government and his party. He couldn't even give satisfactory answers when PDP and BJP were holding negotiations over government formation after the death of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for nearly two and a half months. Recently, PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti, announced the new office bearers and relieved the Naeem Akther from the post of the party's chief spokesman. Mehbooba just two days ago nominated new office-bearers, including one chief spokesman and two others as spokespersons of the party. Dr Mehboob Baig was named the PDP chief spokesman, while Rafi Mir and Ved Mahajan were nominated as PDP spokespersons for Kashmir and Jammu provinces respectively. "Akther remains busy due to the official commitments. That's why we have appointed Dr Mehboob Beg as the Chief spokesman of the party," a PDP leader told Early Times. He denied that Akther has been sacked from the important post which he held for years together. An analyst said, "NaeemAkther in the first stint of PDP-BJP government proved to be a big failure and pitted the entire teaching community against PDP. He (Akther) acted tough against the unions and broke the back of Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Federation (JKTF). The members of the teaching community had openly supported PDP in the 2014 assembly elections but he cracked the whip on them forcing them to change their loyalties." A PDP insider said, "When Mehbooba Mufti was about to take oath as the Chief Minister many leaders within the party had advised her (Mehbooba) to drop Akther from her cabinet but she went ahead with her own decision." A Kashmir watcher said, "There is no doubt about the fact that Akther is a brilliant writer and an intellectual but as a politician he has proved to be a disaster. A politician has to be accommodative and cannot act like a Hitler. In a democratic set up its necessary to take everyone along and one cannot live in isolation." He said, "Akther by raking petty issues and turning them big has proved that he is an immature politician and needs to learn a lot." |
