Aishmuqam Civic body trashes environment norms | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Anantnag, Apr 23: Putting lives of common people who drink river water at risk, Municipal Committee Aishmuqam in Anantnag district of South Kashmir continues to dump solid waste in a rivulet locally known as Aishmuqam Graad, in violation of laws. Rivulet (Aishmuqam Graad) mergers with river Lidder at Trout point. It merits a mention here that river Lidder is main sources of drinking water to half of the Anantnag district besides being a rich habitant of famous fish 'trout'. Locals informed Early Times that sewage is being dumped in the middle of river and during heavy rains, speedy waters flows away the sewage and mixes it with the river water that is being used for drinking purposes by dozens villages, Bijbehara and Anantnag towns. They fear outbreak of water borne diseases in the area due to this anti-environment activity ofcivic body. Activists accused Municipal Committee Aishmuqam and Fisheries department of committing grave negligence as it badly affects aquatic life particularly of trout fish for which the river Lidder is famous. They said that staff of Fisheries department deputed to monitor the river and such anti-environment activities are in deep slumber. Sources said that rarely any one among them attends duties and regularly monitors the beat. "Continuous dumping of garbage at the banks of Aishmuqam River (Aishmuqam Graad) in Aishmuqam by Municipal Committee is very disturbing and sadly symptomatic of a larger problem," Mushtaq Pahalgami, an activist told ET. Demanding a state level awareness campaign, he said, "Dumping untreated garbage near or inbodies is serious issues as lakhs of people down the steam use same water for drinking purposes." He informed that Municipal Committee Mattan is also dumping untreated garbage alongside river lidder at Akrua Bridge and despite repeatedly raising issue with concerned authorities, civic bodyhasn't stopped the practice of dumping sewage that directly flows into river. Executive officer, Municipal committee Aishmuqam, Abdul Rashid wasn't available for a comment as he avoided repeated calls from ET. |
