SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Mohammad Haroon Malik today said that a probe would be conducted in the death of an elderly person at the Budgam Air Force station during the preceding night.
Reports said that a mentally-challenged man was shot dead on Sunday night when he entered the security area of the Air Force station in Budgam district. The mentally challenged person has been identified as Habibullah Shah, a resident of Soibugh village. Habibullah was a resident of Astanpora locality of the Soibugh village. He had left his home on Sunday.
A pall of gloom descended at Astanpora as soon as Habibullah's body was brought to his home. Relatives of the elderly person demanded that the killing should be probed so that the truth comes to the fore. The elderly person was later on buried by his relatives.
In the meantime, Deputy Commissioner Budgam today said that the killing of Habibullah would be probed. He said that the investigation would dispel the apprehension regarding the death of the senior citizen. He added that ex-gratia relief under rules would be given to the family if it is proved that the death is contrary to the official statement.
Earlier in the day a police spokesman said the mentally challenged man crossed the security fence and came close to the station perimeter wall. Even after the repeated warning from the sentry, the man did not stop. The sentry fired some warning shots in the air but the individual did not stop sentry fired towards him.
"At air force station Budgam around midnight one individual entered the security zone area. He crossed the security fence and came close to the station perimeter wall. The spokesman said that later on the station authorities informed the Police post Humhama. The Station House Officer (SHO) and Duty Officer (DO) rushed to the scene of occurrence. Spot examination revealed that the individual of about 50-55 years of age who appears to be mentally challenged has died in the incident.
