World Kidney Day celebrated at SSH Jammu
3/8/2018 11:32:22 PM
Early Times Report
jammu, Mar 8: World Kidney Day was celebrated by the Nephrology Department of Government Medical College at Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) Jammu.
"This year, World Kidney Day falls on the same date as International Women's Day, offering a unique opportunity to focus on women's kidney health," Head of Nephrology Department Dr SK Bali.
Dr Bali said that Women are more at risk for certain kidney diseases and both acute and chronic kidney infections. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can affect a woman's ability to start a family, and raise healthy children. Pregnancies among women with kidney disease carry different risks, depending on levels of kidney function, and can lead to serious health complications.
He informed that some research studies have shown that the risk of developing CKD is slightly more likely in women than men - with 14% prevalence in women vs. 12% in men. While not all studies show the same numbers. "We do know that the risk of developing CKD is at least as high in women as it is in men and that there is clinical evidence to believe that women may be at a higher overall risk for kidney disease. More than 30 million American adults are at risk for CKD," he quoted studies.
Moreover, he added that Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem with adverse outcomes of kidney failure and premature death. CKD affects approximately 195 million women worldwide and it is currently the 8th leading cause of death in women, with close to 600,000 deaths each year.
Meanwhile, Dr. Surinder Sodhi, informed that the department of Nephrology in SSH is providing services to the patients of Kidney diseases since its start in 2013. He thanked the senior faculty members of other departments who have providing Medical and technical support.
Principal Medical College Jammu, HoD Cardiology Dr Sushil Sharma, HoD Radiology Dr Ganshyam Dev Gupta and other HoDs and hospital staff were also present.
