Pvt schools unnerved as SKI recommends 33 % seats for poor children

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 10: A section of private schools across the state is "unnerved" as the State Knowledge Initiative (SKI) has recommended 33 percent seats in private schools be reserved for "economically underprivileged children."
Sources said the SKI that was constituted by the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to improve the educational standard in Jammu and Kashmir, has suggested that in a bid to give more opportunities to the economically under privileged there was a need to have special reservation for such children.
Sources said the SKI, headed by globally-acclaimed academician, Professor Amitabh Mattoo, who is also advisor to Chief Minister, recently submitted its recommendations before the CM. The meeting among others was attended by Chief Secretary BB Vyas.
In its recommendations the SKI has pleaded that "increased reservations will ensure quality education for the underprivileged children and also prevent commercialization of education in private schools."
"Agreeing with the recommendations of the report, Chief Minister asked for converting it into an action plan and thereby executing the same for creating a knowledge industry in the State," the source said adding that action plan once ready would be tabled before the Cabinet for implementation. "During the meeting it was also suggested that there should be private public partnership for uplift of educational standards. The increased reservation of seats is in line with those proposals," the sources said.
Sources said the private school forums, particularly the ones active in Kashmir, have got to know about the recommendations about the reservation, a development that may "finally tame commercialization of educational institutions."
Sources said some of the private school associations have called a meeting to decide future course of action. "We will start lobbying through our well wishers in the Cabinet so that our business interests are not affected because at the end of the day running schools is a business for us," said a member of one such association on the condition of anonymity. When contacted a senior official in the CM Secretariat confirmed to Early Times that the KCI has submitted its recommendations including that on reservation and that the government is pursuing the case for implementation.
